Fancy Carving / Wood Inlay Marquetry / Hand Painted. = Classic late 1800's Swiss Carving Parlor Chair. = Typically these were not intended for actual sitting (this one is strong enough to be used), but rather they were placed in drawing room, hall or parlor to impress guests. = Back splat carving is a grape vine with leaves and flourishes.= Back splat upper image is of three CHAMOIS standing on rock. This image is done with hand painted sections (the fine details) that are inlaid with wood marquetry + the elliptical border seen. = Lower splat image is of a single Alpine Goat (IBEX) - the national animal emblem of Switzerland.
This is executed in the same way the upper image is done. = The seat image is of the European Red Fox standing on a rock - same technique, similar geometric border. = Seat edge border is done in marquetry inlay to resemble a twisted ribbon.
= All four legs are similarly carved - ending in a'double toe' deer-like foot. = Chair structure is assembled in an antique way: back is one solid piece of wood (Walnut we presume) that is tenoned into the seat with wedges driven beneath to make tight. 18.25 Wide overall [46 cm]. Seat Height: 17.625 [45 cm].
Seat front to back about 14.25 [36 cm]. = Sorry, no maker's mark or stamp, we looked carefully. CONDITION: 8.25 out of 10 -- NICE Condition consistent with age.
Pretty strong structure - the legs are firm as can be expected for a chair of this age - easily firm enough to use the chair despite not being rock solid. There would have been a small saving in cost, but this would be outweighed by'messing' with the chair.
Inlay sections are quite good - understated due to the yellowing of the varnish over time. Geometric borders all real nice. Carvings are all intact - slightest scratch or dent can be found, but all negligible - minimal. No splits or gouges in the carving.MAIN ISSUE: is the repaired split in the seat. This is (like the back) a single piece of solid wood. The split runs across from right to left - it's been re-glued and packed with a filler sometime in the past.
The repair is tight and strong, but it is seen. Worst part of this flaw: the split interferes somewhat with the image of the Fox (near the head).Check out my other items.
