This style spread in popularity down the Mississippi & up the western trade routes, & was dubbed the Spanish Saddle by those Missouri makers in recognition of many of the features which had been adopted from saddles that originated from California.
The Spanish saddle pattern was commonly made along the Mississippi River, beginning about the 1830's. This saddle is very similar to the Attakapas saddle, named after a native American tribe in southwest Louisiana, which was a popular style w/ southern cattleman in the Antebellum period. Like other southern civilian saddles they were pressed into Confederate military service, & was most likely used during the Mexican War and/or Texas Revolution as well.FEEL FREE TO MAKE AN OFFER!
